I have a bit of an obsession with beauty products especially with natural organic skincare and unique beauty brands. One such company is Malée, founded in Africa by Zeze Oriakhi-Sao who was inspired to produce a range of 100% natural and organic skincare drawing on from her African roots. Malée’s natural, active, vitamin infused ingredients heal and pamper not only the skin but our mind and senses with its mix of natural oils such as crisp mint, patchouli and spicy pepper evident in not just their skincare but room scents and candles. Did you know that you can use the melted wax from the candle on your skin? All Malée’s ingredients are completely safe, free from nasty chemicals and damaging parabens.
Last week I was invited to a pop-up in London’s Canary Wharf for a wellness morning, a healing and sensory journey for the mind and body and to familiarise myself with the upcoming brand Malée which is now stocked in some of London’s department stores and on-line. The pop-up was located in an “urban jungle” an oasis of calm in the middle of the hustle and bustle that is the City of London. Stepping inside this pop-up was like being transported to an African jungle, glorious plants and sounds were so inviting, I immediately felt a sense of calm taking over me. I was met by some lovely people from the UK’s Malée team and after completing a wellness questionnaire, I sat down to take in the scents and smells of the Malée brand. Candle’s were lit featuring the company’s signature scents, energising Verdure, warm Peppersage and floral Polyanthes.
We talked about the Malée brand and I got to sample some of the products in the range. I tried a little bit of the Verdure Scented Conditioning Body Scrub, it’s winner of 2016’s Beauty Awards and it’s easy to see why. It’s a salt-based scrub – pure salt is suspended in healing, organic oils, after showering and rinsing the product away, pat-dry skin with a soft, warm towel and allow the skin-loving oils to work their magic. I loved it straight away and I’ve got one on order along with the Malée Conditioning Oil which has an exotic mix of sweet almond, avocado, argan and rosehip oils. The scrub is priced at £36, the oil £38, the body cream is £20, and candles are £48, very competitively priced.
I’ve really got a penchant for candles, in fact, I’m slightly obsessive about them so I was really looking forward to smelling Malée’s. They’re all so lovely, it was hard to decide which one I preferred. I light candles depending on what mood I’m in and that’s why I have so many and also depending on what season we’re in. Malée has one for every mood and season from fresh and uplifting Verdue which a mix of crisp mint, patchouli and bright citrus, it’s perfect to use in the spring/summer and for energising the mind. I would say Peppersage is very much an autumnal/winter scent with oils such as woody clary sage and spicy black peppercorn; I really liked it and feel it would set a perfect romantic ambience to any living room or bedroom especially with a roaring fire in the background. Finally, the evocative Polyanthes with floral tuberose, gardenia intertwining with lotus flower and warm vanilla, it’s an enchanting floral candle.
To end the morning, we had a special 5-10-minute relaxing mindfulness session with Jade Shaw who is an Out of Body (OBE) teacher, her approach is embracing the gap between spiritual and scientific views and how that can transcend into our every day lives to help us re-connect and re-charge our minds and bodies. The session was all about learning how to use the smells (candles) and sounds around us, being mindful of our surroundings and just relaxing and letting go of stress. It was only 5 minutes meditation but felt like half an hour, I felt truly reinvigorated and calmer at the same time. It’s something I learnt when I had 6 weeks of CBT therapy 3 years ago, but it was great to be reminded of this practice and that I really do need to make an effort to keep this up and use the technique even if it’s just 5 minutes at the end of my day.
I really enjoyed my morning! I’m grateful to everyone at Malée UK for inviting me to this Wellness Morning and introducing me to the Malée brand. Thank you also to Jade Shaw for the relaxing mindfulness session. It’s clear that we all need to adopt this technique by investing just 5-10 minutes at the end of our busy and frenzied day to zone out and relax the body and mind and what better way to do this than with Malée’s candles and skincare. Thank you for my amazing goody bag which contained a zesty citrusy Verdue room spray and body crème.
